Must Have’s For Your RV

Okay so you made the decision to go fulltime in your RV. Or maybe you are taking a year off to travel around and explore the country. You are starting to downsize and figure out the things you must have during your travels. Sometimes the items you are in need of, are surprising! We have compiled a short list of things we think are must haves that you may need during your travels, whether it’s inside your RV or outside! This is part one of many, since there are so many helpful items you can get for your RV life.

We will go over a few that may seem like common knowledge. But we all have to learn somewhere and sometime, and we all start at the beginning.

You may be surprised to learn that your toilet paper can have a huge impact on your RV. Unfortunately Charmin soft can no longer be your go to toilet paper. You should start using RV specific and septic safe toilet paper. This toilet paper is much easier on your pipes and black tank, as it breaks down a lot easier and safer. Toilet paper build up is a nightmare to fix. Luckily there are many products that you can put in your black tank to help break down the waste. These waste digestors come in liquid and compact pod forms.

Whenever you are dealing with your RV maintenance, disposable gloves are a must have, especially when it comes to your tanks. Your sewer pipes and hose can be nasty business, and when you are on the road, you are always dumping or handling these items. When you are deciding on which hoses to use, keep a few things in mind. 1) how far away are the amenity connections from your RV site 2) will you be traveling in a cold climate area that may have freezes at night? 3) Do you have electric at your site? Do the pedestals look new and functioning?

The reason we ask these though provoking questions are because of the following;

Heated Water Hose

Fresh Water Hose

Sewage Hose

Depending on the distance between the hook ups and the hooks ups to your actual RV, you may need a longer or shorter than expected sewer hose. You need this specific hose for dumping any and all waste from all tanks. It never hurts to have a few different sizes and extras. Sewer hoses aren’t always able to hold up during different types of weather conditions, so wear and tear is inevitable. Having extras is never a bad idea. Don’t forget a container you can store this in, to reduce contact of other items. Like we said, nasty business!

There are two types of water hoses to consider. One is just a regular fresh water hose. The other, is a heated fresh water hose. Heated are higher in price as they are heavier equipped and are plugged into pedestals to reduce the risk of freezing in colder climates. Here in Utah, you will need a heated hose within the months November to April. The best motto to have is always be prepared for any and all weather!

Another thing to keep in mind is providing power to you RV. Typically RVs have either 30amps or 50amp connections. This is to make sure your RV doesn’t receive or take in too much power at once. As that can cause a variety of problems for your RV. Make sure that you get the correct power cord for your RV. The last item we will go over in this post is something that a lot of RVers aren’t aware of. It can save you in an unexpected power outage, a surge of power, if the pedestal you are connected to is faulty, and many more. The more you spend, the higher quality! This is the handy dandy Surge Protector. In our opinion, this is probably one of the most important items to have in your RV arsenal. Like everything else mentioned before, please do your research. Look at reviews whenever buying a product for RV. For the most part, the more expensive the item, the better quality it is. You don’t want to go cheap with your RV supplies unless you absolutely have to. It is always better to spend a bit more so you know you are safer.

In a few weeks, we will go over must haves you might need for the inside! Fun appliances you maybe never heard of or would even think about getting!
