Simple DIY RV Renovation Ideas
With most of our staff being full time RVers, we have had our fair share of getting creative when sprucing up our home on wheels. It’s no secret that renovating RV’s has become a new and growing trend. Some go all out and build from scratch. Others just want to spruce up their space to give it a more homie feel. We have done both! Renovating comes with its challenges, but once finished, can be so rewarding. We wanted to show you some simple DIY projects that you can do, to help spruce up your space!
First, we will go over one of the most popular area of the RV that most people want to change almost immediately, the kitchen. There are a lot of easy and simple ways you can give your kitchen the “wow” factor on a budget. A great way to add some character, is adding peel & stick backsplash. Not only is it easy to apply, it’s very cost efficient in a small space. Keep in mind, whether you are traveling full time or stationary, you do need to take a few precautions to making sure it sticks. To ensure longevity, we suggest adding an extra adhesive. Adhesive spray seems to be one of the better options if you decide to go that route. With peel & stick backsplash, you can find a variety of different colors and designs. Amazon is a great place to start but there are other companies like Tic Tac Tile.
If you aren’t a fan of the typical Pine colored cabinets, a fresh coat of paint can do wonders. Even adding different hardware to the cabinets can make a world of difference. Don’t want to budget for new hardware? You can paint those with a spray paint, make sure to practice patience so they may dry thoroughly!
The last recommendation for the kitchen area that can dramatically change the appearance is using “contact paper” on the counters. They can come in almost any design and can save you a ton of money and time, opposed to ripping out the counters and going a more expensive or heavier option.
Going on to any renovation page for RV’s, one of the most common complaint are the VALANCES! They give a very out dated vibe that most renovators don’t love. So why not switch them out for something more eye catching? Some go for custom made blinds that are made specifically for the windows (RV’s have very unique windows compared to sticks & bricks). Regular curtain rods are an option, as well as traditional curtains. You can also go the unique route and make your own. One of our full time RVers used wooden dowels, homemade leather straps, and custom sewn curtains.
When in doubt, you can always use paint to your advantage for any space. If you aren’t a painter, you can use wallpaper and making sure to always use extra adhesive.
Did you know that you can switch out light fixtures with normal house fixtures? You can! All you need to do is make sure you are using the correct light bulbs. All Rv’s run on 12v. You can go on amazon and find lightbulbs that are 12v and they are not hideous! I would, of course, make sure you do your research before doing anything electrical, but it can be done! Changing light fixtures can really change the look of the RV. Or you can do a few DIY’s to hide the lights that come with the RV.
There are many ways you can do simple and easy DIY projects to make your RV feel and look more like a home. These are just a few tips and ideas that we have done ourselves. If you decide to renovate your RV, we would love to see the before and after’s!
